KILLARNEY APARTMENT

Our goal was to revitalise a historically significant apartment within a cherished colonial-style building in Killarney, Johannesburg. Embracing the philosophy of ‘contemporary comfort’, we aimed to enhance the apartment's livability while preserving its charm.

To achieve this, we reconfigured the space by removing internal walls, creating a seamless open-plan layout flooded with natural light. A white-painted steel structure was strategically inserted to both support the space and pay homage to its architectural heritage. The second bedroom was resized to prioritise communal areas, fostering connectivity and fluidity.

A versatile entry/dining/circulation area is central to the design, serving as the apartment's focal point. This hub seamlessly extends into various living spaces through subtle visual elements, such as overhead steel mesh structures, which integrate harmoniously with the surroundings.

A restrained materials palette and meticulous detailing throughout the apartment create a serene ambience, allowing moments of vibrant colour in built-in cabinetry to accentuate the space. This aesthetic synergy is further enriched by the client's art and furniture collection, culminating in a timeless and sophisticated living environment.
