The Peech Hotel is a tranquil garden oasis in Johannesburg’s Melrose suburb. It was originally designed as a string of semi-detached duplex units that extended up the length of the single property. In 2017, the client approached Meshworks to design a fifteen-room extension to the hotel on a portion of a recently purchased neighbouring property. Meshworks decided to continue the ‘pavilion in a garden’ approach but in a new guise, rejecting the mass volumes and sterile corridors of traditional urban hotel typologies. As the portion available for the extension was relatively small, the challenge of accommodating many hotel rooms on the site turned into an opportunity to implement an architecture that mediates privacy and visibility.
